Ford Focus drives solar

Love Energy

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Ford's new Focus Electric car will feature a roof mounted solar panel, which could supply 1600km a month of free driving.

Currently electric cars in Australia recieve their power from plugging into convential electricity, however the Ford Focus electric will instead use solar generated while driving to supplement or replace electricity derived from coal.

Ford Australia is currently assesing the possibility of releasing the car in the Asia-Pacific region, but has ruled out introducing the solar technology to the Falcon or Territory models which are made in Australia.

Currently the only mass-produced electric car in Australia is the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, although more are expected to arrive later this year.

Love Energy is excited by the new technology being applied to today's vehicles and hopes solar will have a long future in the Australian automotive industry.

Can't say I've been a Ford driver before, but I'll definitely consider it now. Sounds like there's great savings to be had on top of helping the environment, so fingers crossed Ford Australia bring it out here!
