WA Government to buy solar plant

Love Energy

The ABC is reporting the Western Australian Government will purchase the renewable energy generated by the Greenough River Solar Plant and Mumbida Wind Farm, both south of Geraldton in the state's mid-west.

Combined, the solar plant and wind farm will produce 65 megawatts of power, which will be used to offset the cost of running the Binnigup Desalination Plant.

When completed in late 2011, the Greenough River Solar Plant will comprise 40,000 photovoltaic panels and produce up to 10 megawatts of power.

Energy Minister Pat Collier says the purchases have been made with the goal of helping the state reach its renewable energy target of 20% by 2020, which Love Energy reported yesterday was not on track to be reached in time.

Love Energy would like to remind Perth residents that despite feed-in tariffs closing at the start of August, there are still significant savings to be made from solar in WA.

Good start but they might need to do more to reach their target!
